Seeking role models

You want to change? Don’t run to the people who are where you want to be. They’re already there. The world has changed since they had to change. Find the people who are running with you. Use mentors as signposts. But they can’t tell you how to get there. That way they got there is already at least partially closed to you by virtue of the way the world has moved on from that.

Mentors are great at teaching you the lessons they learned, so that you don’t make the same mistakes they did. They have knowledge and experience that you don’t have yet and are wonderful sounding boards and reflective surfaces for your journey. Seek mentors because they are guides and beacons on your journey, not because you want to copy their path.

How they got there isn’t how you will.
