Top 5 Metaverses that are creating ripples in the virtual world

Primarily, what is a Metaverse and why do I need to know about it?
A metaverse is a virtual space with a sense of reality that allows users to live life in the virtual world, or rather, on the internet. The term ‘metaverse’ seems to be everywhere, from the boardroom discussions to the cafeterias, everyone seems to be talking about them. You can play, shop, work, socialise, and even advertise. The possibilities are limitless, for example:

-Gucci recently sold a digital bag for over $4100 in the virtual world.

-Disney plans to roll out a metaverse-theme park.

-Coca Cola recently auctioned its first NFT for $575,000!

We have a more in depth article that explains what metaverses are, which you can find here. However, in this article we are looking at how successful metaverses have forged a new, virtual world of opportunities! Now, let’s deep dive and have a look at the top five metaverses that have already established their presence in the Web3 industry.

1. Decentraland

The most popular name, Decentraland, is a virtual world built on the Ethereum blockchain. The metaverse equips players with a decentralized infrastructure, allowing them to develop digital real estate and control the in-game assets and policies using Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs). Speaking of which, an NFT-based metaverse real estate company, Metaverse Group, recently purchased a plot worth $2.43m in Decentraland. Along the same lines, Samsung owns an immersive virtual world in Decentraland, Samsung 837X, which has been frequented by 120,000 fans so far.

Decentraland provides complete digital ownership to its users with the help of fungible and non-fungible tokens. Users can let their creativity run wild and build everything from buildings to mini-games.

2. The Sandbox

The Sandbox, a virtual world where players can build and monetize their gaming experiences in the Ethereum blockchain. The blockchain-powered gaming platform integrates three products, Voxel editor, marketplace and game maker, to boost user-generated content production. Users can secure their products by claiming copyrights using blockchain and smart contracts.

Sandbox also runs an NFT marketplace that allows users to publish, upload, and sell NFT creations. Users can upload their creations into an IPFS network and then register onto the blockchain to prove ownership. Once accomplished, these creations become assets that can be sold to potential buyers.

3. Highstreet

Highstreet allows users to sell and shop things using HIGH currency, the native token of Highstreet that enables users to vote on major decisions within the metaverse. Highstreet recently partnered with Animoca Brands for an initial home offering of 5,000 futuristic all-terrain trailers. The partnership will allow Animoca to build residences in the metaverse where Animoca games and esports league will take the lead. Other Web3 regions already exist within Highstreet such as Binance Beach, AVAX Alps, and Everyrealm.

In addition to HIGH being used as a medium of purchase within the Metaverse, this virtual world also offers STREET tokens. STREET can be used as an in-game currency to facilitate in-game transactions, like buying from other players. The token can also be used to complete quests within the game.

4. Metahero

Metahero is another metaverse centred around building high-definition avatars of real-world objects and people using 3D scanning. To further push the initiative, the company has installed a physical scanning chamber in Doha that scans objects and creates their 3D versions ready to be uploaded for the Metahero metaverse.

The metaverse plans to create the largest database featuring scanned people and objects from around the globe. As of now, it has scanned and added more than 100,000 avatars to the Metaverse. Metahero has recently partnered with Fame MMA, a popular virtual combat sports firm. The partnership will allow users to scan and use their 3D replicas as their avatars in fighting matches, thus getting a more immersive experience.

5. Enjin

Enjin is a gaming-focused metaverse that allows users to mint its local token, ENJ, which can then be used to purchase in-game assets. ENJ helps users buy anything — from medicine to additional powers for your character. The metaverse came into being in 2009 and has now emerged as one of the largest gaming community platforms, housing over 20 million registered gamers.
