White Sands to Carlsbad Caverns

Day 31. Today we traveled from Las Cruces, New Mexico to Carlsbad Caverns National Park. We would be staying in the town of Carlsbad just outside of the park.

At the Visitor Center

We left our AirBNB around 8am this morning. We wanted to get to the park early enough to do a ranger guided tour as well as a self guided tour. Carlsbad is basically the greatest cave dwelling you can do. Before we went there we stopped at a Hana Banana in El Paso, Texas. We had a unique egg and bacon sandwich and were off for the day.

WARNING: The pictures I have aren’t great due to my lack of tripod and the lighting, but hopefully they give you a general idea of what the place is like. If you want more info and clearer pictures there is Google.

Anyway, we got to Carlsbad National Park around noon and were able to explore the place on our own before getting to the ranger guided tour at 3pm. The place is gigantic and if you’re ever in the area it’s a must. It’s a site to behold.

You had to be there.

We were staying at the place until 7:45pm to watch the bat flight program. This is basically when all the bats fly out of the cave into the open air. They say anywhere from 10,000 to 1.2 million bats will fly out depending on a variety of factors. But, unfortunately the bat flight program was cancelled due to a massive thunderstorm. All in all it was another great day, and tomorrow we head to Lubbock, Texas for a night.
