Resource Center | 4.17
This month, we started the process of setting up Resource Center at the Stepping Stones Shelter in Rockville, Maryland. Stepping Stones is a homeless shelter serving families with children for over 30 years; most of the families are headed by single mothers.
We dropped off our first Resource Center package at the emergency shelter this month, complete with a computer tablet, information guide, posters, and a handwritten letter. The lab there only has four computers, so we think the tablet will be particularly helpful! We were greeted with smiles all around, and were overwhelmed by the amount of gratitude with which we were received. Next week, we will meet with the director to discuss next steps.
Stepping Stones already provides food, shelter, tutoring, case management services, employment counseling, and post-shelter support to homeless families. The shelter’s most recent report states that in FY 2015, 42 new families benefitted from the shelter’s services, including its housing initiatives. Additionally, Stepping Stones helped 65 families who previously resided in the shelter. All the school-aged children had a 100% school attendance rate during their stay, and all of them received tutoring at the shelter.
With the free educational and professional help in Resource Center, the adults passing through the shelter will be able to further their careers or jump-start new careers, and their children can supplement their lessons or learn new skills. Thank you for giving up some of your own resources to help some of the families who need help in Montgomery County. We will update you next month about the impact Resource Center has on the families at Stepping Stones!
