Over the years Linux-based operating systems have dominated the market when it comes to the internet and data centers around the world. Linux runs about 90% of the cloud computing space around the world. Every time someone uses Google, for example, they basically use a machine running the Linux kernel. Let’s dive through the reasons why you should choose a Linux server.

Open Source and Free

You are able to see the source code used to build Linux. You can review the code to explore security vulnerabilities, locate bugs or even to study the code functions. You are able to modify a Linux operating system according to your server needs. Most Linux operating systems are free of costs such as CentOS( RHEL based operating system), Slackware and Debian.

Stability

Ask any Linux specialist. Linux operating systems are well known for their ability to run for years without any failure. Linux is able to run large amounts of processes at once much better than Microsoft operating systems. Another plus point is that Linux systems generally do not require a reboot after configuration changes.

Hardware Requirements

Windows systems typically require frequent hardware upgrades to accommodate increased resource demands. Linux is slim, scalable, flexible and performs well on just about any computer system. Linux can easily be reconfigured to run only services that your business requires reducing hardware requirements even further and improving performance at the same time.

Ideal for Public Cloud

Generally, Linux is the most available and reliable solution for data centers and cloud computing environments to handle critical workloads. The Linux design enables it to support many users, devices, target systems, and large workloads. Linux is modular, open-source and scalable among other reasons just why it is ideal for cloud computing environments.

If you have a look at major public cloud providers and what they offer, you will find that almost every one of them offers different forms of Linux. Perhaps, to everyone’s surprise, even Microsoft jumped on the Linux bandwagon. Microsoft Azure makes use of Linux on their cloud environment in fact about 30% of Azure virtual machines are Linux based systems.

Overall Low Costs

The core kernel of the Linux operating system is free to use. Most Linux based software is free to use however there are companies who offer commercial licensing for specific Linux-based hardware and software. Many cloud computing services are low cost as the basis of the technology is free to use. Overall Linux offers free and low-cost technology.
