Red Hot Chili Peppers releases first single in 5 years

Before you read — listen:

5 years of waiting. 5 years. And yet, everything feels alright in RHCP world. Front-man Anthony Kiedis is singing about drugs, Flea is slapping his bass, and DISCO KEYS?! Yes, disco keys. It’s okay.

“Dark Necessities” has me thinking “Can’t Stop” and I’m totally okay with it.

The thumping verses and melodic choruses are in file with true RHCP style, not to mention the sweet interlude to tie in the second and last chorus.

But it almost seems too safe.

Yes, it’s been 5 years. So shouldn’t it be more than what we expect from our beloved boys of pepper? I’m hopeful for some surprise with The Getway, but with Danger Mouse in production, we can’t expect something dishonest to who RHCP has established themselves to be.

Long-time fans and new fans alike should look forward to that funk-twisted alt-rock that tears into our soul and makes want to dance all at the same time.

It’s freaking Red Hot Chili Peppers. They are who they are.

Give it an honest listen, and tell us what you think.

Look, I was born two years after Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991) was released — I’m not a RHCP expert. That’s why we hope you can help contribute to the conversation. Follow CROWD on Twitter and like us on Facebook — tell us what you think of “Dark Necessities.”
