From the Crowdfire Stories Podcast 📻

Born into a family of legendary jazz and soul musicians in New Hampshire, Yamica Peterson gave her first performance when she was only three years old. The oldest grand-daughter of the late Jean M. Jones (Portsmouth’s ‘Lady of Song’), great-niece to local jazz legend Sharon “Brown Sugar” Jones, and the daughter of blues, R&B, and funk legend Pete Peterson, Yamica is a successful local musician with a unique neo-soul sound.

Yamica’s built her own presence on the local circuit with live performances all over the coast. Becoming a professional musician is no easy task and being a musician while supporting a growing family is even more of a challenge. Yamica successfully navigates both with grace and strength. On this episode of Crowdfire Stories, she draws upon a combination of learnings from a family of musicians and her own business school background to share her wisdom on music, life, and everything in between.

Short on time? Here are five take-aways from this episode:

  1. Always have more than one income stream. The world of freelance is unreliable. Having multiple income streams protects you in case you lose a regular gig.
  2. Networking with locals is the way into performing at local establishments. Don’t neglect good old fashioned networking and authentic connections.
  3. Don’t forget to call local live music places to let them know you’re available. Booking shows requires feet on the ground or hands on the phone (whichever applies).
  4. Always make flyers that match your online content. Remember that people still check out flyers and they’ll google you or check out your upcoming show if they see an attention-grabbing flyer.
  5. Don’t look at challenges wondering how you could possibly overcome them. Instead look at them as simply what you must do to grow.
