WalkSpot, our recently launched collaboration with Victoria Walks to explore perceptions of walking safety and amenity, has seen overwhelming community participation with people submitting hundreds of safe and unsafe walking locations across Metropolitan Melbourne. With the project map set to close on 28 April, we are approaching 2,000 spots.

“Our understanding of road safety issues is usually limited to official crash statistics, which only tell part of the story” says Ben Rossiter, Executive Officer of Victoria Walks. “Crash statistics provide data on serious injury crashes, but they don’t tell us about all crashes, what people are worried about and where they do or don’t feel safe walking.”

WalkSpot is made possible through a TAC Community Road Safety Grant. VicRoads and 14 Metropolitan Councils are also official partners in the project. They will each receive the data for their Government area to help prioritise walking improvements across Melbourne.

WalkSpot was also featured in The Age online.
