Construction is underway on the CityLYNX Gold Line Phase 2 project. City leaders celebrated the milestone last Saturday in Charlotte’s Historic West End.

“It’s really going to be a connection between the east and west sides of our city,” said Mayor Jennifer Roberts. “This is going to connect Johnson C. Smith right to our Uptown. The streetcar is an incredible, essential link in our transit system.”

The project, with a total cost of $150 million, will add 11 stops and replace the existing vehicles with modern streetcars featuring hybrid technology. Phase 2 will also include upgrades to much of the city’s infrastructure including water and sewer improvements, as well as utility upgrades.

Members of the Charlotte City Council, former U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and U.S. Representative Alma Adams were among those who attended the groundbreaking.

“What you’ll be doing is something more than just building transportation. It’ll be more than just getting people from A to B,” said Foxx. “It will be more than just catalyzing new housing and new jobs and new opportunities. You will be pointing the way for the country to realize how to bring our people together again.”
