I’m writing this as October 2024 heads with dizzying speed toward November 2024. If you’re a citizen of the U.S. — or for that matter, of Planet Earth — you can feel the general sense of anxiety heading straight for the zone marked Full Goose Loony.

But if you’ve spent enough decades here in Earth School, you’ve lived through some weird history, personally and as part of the larger collective.

Now more than ever, what you’ve gained from that matters. And it makes no difference if you’re not famous or an influencer (a word that gives me hives) or if you don’t have a gigantic following on social media. Or any following at all.

What matters is that you’re an older adult, and you know something about survival.

Betty White said, “The older you get, the better you get — unless you are a banana.” I offer my personal evidence for that — and if it resonates with you, there is something I’d like you to do.

Every time I entertain this thought, I ask myself: is that really true, or am I just blowing sunshine up my own skirt?
