Anne with an E — Netflix
This had some hard lessons in it that we can learn from today.
She hated her red hair and freckles. She referred to her description as “hair and bones.” Funny, I had a girlfriend a long time ago that referred to herself the same way. Maybe she got that description from the book.
I never read “Anne of Green Gables,” written by L. W. Montgomery, as a child and should have. I don’t know if the series on Netflix “Anne with an E” did it any justice at all so I can’t judge, but what a story!
The setting was the late 1800’s to 1905, with all the white, male and female, oppression it could possibly take. The women were either spinsters or married, but mostly women were changing their minds about that. Women had to fight for the right to be their own person and not be considered a loss to society if a boy kissed her or she kissed a boy or even walked her home from school. At that point, it was either marriage or she was a stain on society and totally ruined. Nothing was said or done about the boy.
She was accidentally adopted by a couple — an older brother and sister — who were expecting a boy but got a girl. They kept her after a trial period. She was an orphan and grew up in an orphanage filled with abuse and ridicule. They made fun of her because she read a lot and had such a wild…
