Are You a Boomer Geek?
I am and am damn proud of it.
Aren’t you as tired as I am of social media stories that portray all of us Boomers as technology idiots who can’t send an email or figure out how to send a text message? As hard as it is for some young ‘uns to believe, some of us Boomers can even reboot a router or access files on the cloud. Shocking, huh?
Let us not forget that Boomers invented much of the technology we take for granted. Don’t believe me? Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Steve Wozniak, Larry Ellison, and Tim Berners-Lee were all born in the 1940s and 50s.
I am a Boomer Geek. My far-sighted husband bought a Z-89 computer and plopped it on the desk in 1982. I did not want it. I was an English major dammit, not some kind of computer weirdo.
The Zenith was an ugly gray hulking beast that mocked me whenever I touched the keyboard.
But slowly I warmed to the beast, tamed it, and got hooked. No one would have predicted that I would soon start selling computers in one of the first retail stores. The entire rest of my working life was based on technology.
