Don’t slip into these habits

She’s about to get on her bike.

When was the last time you rode your bike? If it was recently, I bet you felt like a kid again. It's exhilarating.

If you are over 50, feel lucky. I'm currently hosting a foreign exchange student who is from Niger, Africa, where the average life expectancy is 61.5 years, due to poverty and a lack of access to healthcare.

In the U.S. we have an expectancy of 79. And most of us have relatives who are older than that.

How do we make the most of our remaining years? Even if you are disease-free, you probably still have aches and pains. My right hip has been bothering me for the last year. I refuse to get an MRI. I'm doing the don't ask don't tell routine. I'm not ready to know.

Here are five more things that I am actively avoiding:

Making grunting sounds as I get out of the car or rise off the couch.

My husband does this and it drives me crazy. There's no reason to make those sounds. All they do is draw attention to our aches and pains and make us sound and feel older than we are. Grunting is not going to improve your ability to stand up. So stop doing it.
