I am far too young for these, but they came in handy! Photo by author.

Who likes a colonoscopy? Or the prep? I had put it off for years. I was content with an occasional mammogram, feeling like I was getting enough preventive care for a year or so.

More than 10 years crept by, and my doctor kept mentioning I was overdue.

The preparation the night before a colonoscopy is challenging. Park yourself near a toilet, be alert to the slightest urge, or buy adult diapers. That prep works! Faster and more furiously than I remembered.

Beyond scheduling the procedure and marking off time the night before to prepare, you must have a driver bring you home afterward. Uber and Lyft are not acceptable options. My doctor’s office wanted the name of my driver a week in advance.

This was a major drawback.

The last time I had a colonoscopy my then-husband was not available.

The girlfriend who took me to the procedure 12 years ago, passed away this summer.

What’s a single gal to do?

Should I ask my male companion? Would he dare to cross the line into a new level of intimacy? Would it make or break our relationship? I recall…
