As a writer, I occasionally come across phrases that are no longer used. They always fascinate me, and although I know they have an origin, I’m usually too lazy to look them up.

I received a message from one of my friends yesterday answering some of my perplexing questions. Although many of these phrases have fallen out of favor, it’s nice to know their origin. Here are just a few.
