Drinking Tea by the Window

At my age, it is a pleasure to drink tea
and sit by the open window
on a pleasant spring day

To remember my stories,
wake up each morning
to enjoy the rest of my years

It is heaven sipping from a mug,
munching on a sugar cookie
and hearing a woman speak in Spanish

There’s no more work to be done
I have finished with the worry
My grown children can fend for themselves

It is comforting to hold the warm teacup
while gazing out the window
at my garden full of tulips

To finally live a simple life,
in a home I own, free and clear
and a bed with fresh sheets, ready for a nap.
