Ashamed. Defeated. Afraid.

Those are just a few of the words Edna used when describing how a scammer gained access to her savings account and the nearly $60,000 she had squirreled away.

The money she was so proud of saving through her own smarts, thriftiness and sacrifice.

The money she wanted to pass down to her daughter and granddaughter, whose help allowed her to stay in her own home instead of moving to a facility.

The money she hoped would make their lives just a little bit easier one day.

But it won’t.

Edna was a victim of fraud.

Now that money is in the hands of a criminal who is probably repeating the same scam on other unsuspecting seniors.

Unfortunately, her story is not unique. She is just one of more than 375,000 American seniors (60+) tricked into giving away money and personal information last year.

It’s National Consumer Protection Week, and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has released its 2022 fraud report.
