Oddly enough, I knew just the moment. It happened in third grade; I was 8 years old.
I attended Southside Elementary School in Cairo, Georgia. The coterie of pre-pubescent boys I fraternized, hobnobbed, and shared kindred cahoots with were avid professional football fans. Despite our youth, we had a decent grasp on the essentials of the pro game as fans. Most of us could remember player names on team rosters better than we could recall significant dates in history, multiplication tables, or the location of Uganda on a map. Skewed priorities notwithstanding, our collective football knowledge could rival most armchair adult fans.
We argued about the previous Sunday’s games during recess or got one of our own going on the playground. In 1970, we played full-contact tackle football — no pads, no helmets…no ball. A pine cone was a tolerable substitute for not having an actual football to toss around…
