From Hope to Humility: The Challenge of Learning to Surrender
Finding blessings in an unexpected emergency
At the beginning of the year, I chose three phrases, all variations on the theme of surrender, as my guiding principles. I’m getting older, I thought. If I don’t practice letting go now, it will probably be tough when the big transition comes.
Foolishly, I thought I understood surrender and explained my phrases like this:
- Surrender to what is
- Flow without resistance
- Let go of everything
I thought, I hoped, I would surrender to the Great Mystery. Perhaps profound spiritual insights would emerge, which I could share with my dear readers.
I didn’t expect letting go to be easy, but I never imagined it would be so harsh.
The opportunity for surrender arrived purely on the physical plane—no rainbows, unicorns, or fairy lights.
On one level, I know my life gives me exactly what I need for personal transformation. But as the Powers That Be delivered rapid-fire opportunities for surrender, I wondered if I could handle what true surrender requires.
