My boyfriend’s tendency to hijack conversations, his lack of interest in my life, and his defensive behavior when confronted with these issues is problematic. I recently wrote an article citing these red flags in my new relationship and it at the bottom if you’d like to read it.

I talk. He does not listen.

Then, after a long silence, he says something about himself or his life without acknowledging anything I just said.

We do not have conversations.

The Cambridge Dictionary defines conversation as “an informal, usually private, talk in which two or more people exchange thoughts, feelings, or ideas or in which news or information is given or discussed.”

The key word here is exchange. That does not happen with my boyfriend and me. Here is an example from a phone conversation about an hour ago.

Me: “I can’t believe I fell off my bike yesterday. The bike was not even moving! I can’t seem to get off without losing my balance. I lay at the end of the driveway, hoping none of the neighbors saw me. Then, I thought, where are the neighbors to come and help me!?” I laughed.
