In adjusting to life as I age, I’ve found small changes or adaptations can have a significant impact on my well-being.

Earlier this year, pain in my feet affected my walking. Therefore, I focused on regaining my mobility and ignored persistent head and neck aches for four months.

After physical therapy relieved the pain, I requested another referral for my neck. Fortunately, the doctor refused, and during the investigations that followed, a severe loss of hearing in an ear, unrelated to aging, was diagnosed by an otolaryngologist. It was unconnected to the newly discovered tumor in my brain.

The specialist had conducted research that found an association between hearing loss and dementia. This association was also highlighted in recent research by a Johns Hopkins team. Consequently, she pulled no punches with me, emphasizing the poor outcomes untreated hearing loss can have on cognitive functioning. Unceremoniously, I found myself part of the 45.3% of my age group with impaired hearing. Hearing loss is an increasing problem.
