Last Tuesday, I got a letter from AARP asking me to renew my membership and a letter from the government telling me it was time to apply for social security.

There’s no getting around it. I’m Old.

The good news? The government can’t wait to start paying back the $$ it has been deducting from my paychecks for many decades.

The letter told me that since I’m turning 70 in November, I needed to apply to start receiving benefits now.

So, I did.

So how much of an ordeal was it to apply?

The letter gave me both apply-by-phone and apply-online options.

Although I usually prefer to work with a person, I decided to apply online first, and then, if I hit a wall, switch over to trying to connect with a human.

But I didn’t hit a wall.

Once I’d logged on, applying for benefits was surprisingly easy. And quick! Because:

(1) I already had an online social security account, which I’d created to apply for Medicare, and

(2) I’d already gathered the information I needed. The website lists the information you’re going to need, so you can find it before you start.
