Disclaimer: This is humor, inspired by a true story. I am not broke or friendless. I am old, so I’m on drugs.

I am not a big socializer but I do enjoy the company of like-minded people, board games, sports, and community service. Where I draw the line is large groups, noisy crowds, brunch, weddings, and holiday parties.

Where I build a wall is with a book club run by women. Wait — is there any other kind?

Do men have book clubs?

According to science, people who are “highly social” enjoy large groups, noisy crowds, meals out, celebrations, and holiday parties.

They also enjoy book clubs.

The deeper problem is whenever I try to socialize with groups of women, I want to tear my hair out. I am not sure what the exact number of women I can tolerate is, but I think it might be six. Who the hell am I kidding? That’s way too many.

Four. Yes, exactly four of us altogether, preferably playing Bridge.

It’s been difficult to thread the social needle, and this didn’t happen when I retired. I’ve been this way my whole life. I seem to easily get too much of People, then withdraw like a hermit crab into…
