How do I choose my name?

My husband Charlie and I got a special Christmas gift this year. Our son and daughter-in-law were visiting from Seattle, where they are living for three years while she completes a fellowship in pediatric nephrology.

Shortly after arriving, my son handed us a little Christmas stocking that said “Baby Alexander,” and contained an ultrasound photo and a positive pregnancy test.

They had told us three months previously that they were trying, but my husband and I were taken aback by how quickly they were able to get pregnant.

Of course, we were super excited, but then the next morning, it kind of hit us.

Holy shit! We’re going to be grandparents.

We sat there with our coffee, looking at each other.

Charlie said “I’m not ready!”

“What do you need to do?”

“I don’t know.”

I started laughing. Is anyone ever prepared? Just like, are we ever prepared to be a parent?

We are both super excited that we're going to have a grandchild. There's just that connotation that comes with the word “grandparent.”

OLD.
