I’ve Made Peace With Knowing I Will Always Be In Pain

However, I’ve learned some things that help

There are four stages to a person’s life.

1. You wake up in the morning and nothing hurts.

2. You wake up in the morning and check to see what hurts.

3. You wake up in the morning and check to see what doesn’t hurt.

4. You wake up in the morning and everything hurts.

I don’t want this to be a litany of my aches and pains. If anything, I’m healthier than I’ve been in years after losing more than 60 pounds. But there are some things that give me daily pain that I’ve learned to live with. I’ve had multiple surgeries on both hands, and I’ve been known to throw my back out folding underwear.

My discomfort also pales in comparison to a couple of my friends. Pain levels can vary greatly. For example, my ex-wife’s pain is far worse than mine. She has had major back pain for decades. Only three months after we began dating, she had a neck fusion done. This is where they took bone from her hip and used it to replace the deteriorated discs in her neck. It didn’t keep the pain away as long as she’d hoped, and for the last 20 years, it has dramatically affected her life.
