We talked to real people on the phone

When I was younger, I could pick up the phone and call a business and get a real person.

I would tell them my issue, and they would resolve my problem. I didn’t have to listen to a menu of options. I didn’t have to press more numbers to get someone.

There weren’t 20 minutes of waiting to listen to annoying music, while a recorded voice interrupted every few minutes to say how much they cared about my call.

Back then, a recorded voice didn’t say call back later after I waited half an hour and hung up on me.

And I didn’t have to chat with a bot to get an answer.

A real person answered the phone. Real people answered the phone and prided themselves on giving us great customer service.

The customer was always right. I miss that.

Limited Use of Credit cards

I remember a time when if you wanted to buy something but couldn’t afford to pay for it, you put it on layaway. You never had to use a credit card. You just gave them a deposit and paid for the item every week until you paid for it.
