I’m a Trekkie, no doubt about it. But, from the series beginning, way back in 1966, Spock was my favorite character.

This week I was reminded of Spock’s greeting, ‘Live long and prosper’ by an article discussing the idea of extending the human healthspan six years longer. Humans are living longer than ever but not longer and healthier. We don’t want just the ‘live long, but the ‘prosper’ part.

I mastered the salute back then, though now my older fingers struggle to produce the famous V. I never did achieve the pronunciation of the Vulcan translation, dif-tor heh smusma.

Momentarily sidetracked, I had to find out the origin of the Vulcan greeting.

Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock, talked about the saying in a 2015 Washington Post article.

“This is the shape of the letter shin,” Nimoy said in the 2013 interview, making the famous “V” gesture. The Hebrew letter shin, he noted, is the first letter in several Hebrew words, including Shaddai (a name for God), Shalom (the word for hello, goodbye and peace) and Shekhinah, which he defined asthe feminine aspect of God who supposedly was created to live among humans.”—The Jewish roots of Leonard Nimoy and ‘live long and prosper’.
