Memories — A Light in a Corner of My Mind

It’s more than a song lyric to me

Funny thing about memories, or mine at least. Like an equal opportunity employer, they are fair and unbiased in conjuring up both positive and not-so-positive events across my adult years on the planet.

I was a young adult getting my footing in the grown-up world when the blockbuster movie “The Way We Were” with the hit theme song, Memories, was released in 1973.

I related to the romantic drama of the movie, the power of memory and how it shapes lives, and, of course, the theme song.

How ironic that, I now think over fifty years later, memories, like in the song, do light the corners of my mind.

Sometimes, weirdly, the good memories are held within the bad, and vice versa. For example, my marriage ended after nearly thirty years of existence on a diet of pretending with a heavy side of wishful thinking.

I don’t recall it as day-to-day misery, and it wasn’t. Embedded in an unsustainable however long-term relationship were plenty of good things. They are indefatigable; they keep popping up unbidden. On the cosmic scale, two boys, now men with children of their own provide my memory bank with decades of memories of events that refuse…
