Must Obituaries Sugarcoat the Dead?

Confronting the eulogy effect of loss

When my mother died recently (at the astounding age of 101), it fell to me to write her obituary. I’d composed my father’s death notice 14 years ago, but I needed a refresher on the form, so I checked out some strangers’ obituaries as examples. That’s when I noticed the eulogy effect.
