My Screen is Aging Me!
The science behind my digital decay
The favorite part of my day is slouching on the couch and staring at the television. Yep. I know it’s not good, that I should be out doing something constructive like volunteering at my local food pantry or reading books for Granny and Me Time at the local library.
But I love television, films, and sitting at my computer, pouring my heart out for a few claps here and there. I know what you’re thinking. I’m a couch potato and deserve my future using a walker to retrieve the remote.
But listen: this isn’t just about laziness. This is a carefully curated, sedentary art form. One I’ve mastered. Yep, I’m a pro! My youngest daughter of five, climbs mountains. I, on the other hand, scale television programs — all six of The Crown, crawled through every bleak minute of The Last of Us , and lived to tell the tale of fifteen consecutive hours of The Pitt.
As most of us know, what we love often leads to our ultimate demise. For me, it’s spending too much time shlumped in front of a screen — writing, scrolling, binge-watching, watching films in Italian. It sucks.
In a groundbreaking study entitled Leisure-Time Physical Activity, Sedentary Behavior, scientists investigated how leisure screen time (LST) affects aging. And spoiler: it’s not good.
