Next Time I Brush My Hair

Next time I brush my hair,
wrapping the strands around my fingers,

I will walk to the backyard apple tree
and drape among its battered branches

threads of silver, soft yet strong
much-sought for by robins and wrens;

a perfect carpet, safe and warm
for the bellies of naked nestlings.
