Don’t worry, this has nothing to do with productivity

Do retirees want to live better or just differently? Statistically, it is much easier to make huge gains in just about anything when you are scraping the bottom. We do that in education all the time — low-performing schools make good gains with some tweaking that the administration will attribute to their excellent management. The same tweaks in a high-performing school will result in a much smaller gain because they are already doing great (probably because their students are from a high SES area, but that is for a different article).

The point is, can we get much better than we are now? Do we want to try to squeeze out just a few more activities during the day?

As I’ve noted in previous missives, if you are reading this you are probably a mature adult who has already won the lottery. You have probably worked hard for a long time and planned for your future accordingly. You are now reaping the benefits you worked for decades to sow. This is something that many never achieve and only dream about. This is your time. Revel in it. Again, do we need to engage in an endless pursuit of self-improvement?

If you are lucky, you get the gift of time shortly before you die
