Retirement Seminar Fail
I was about to give my first retirement investment seminar. I was hyped, ready and knowledgeable — but wrong.
Fresh off the FINRA exam and certified as a newly-minted financial planner, I was determined to save the financial world. Failing that, at least secure the retirement of my clients.
My problem at this early stage of my career— I needed clients to advise.
My mother had recently lost her husband to heart failure. She then experienced a robbery in her home where she had lived for 50 some years. My wife was able to convince her to move into a very acceptable retirement village closer to where we lived in the Philadelphia suburbs.
As a family, we would visit, have dinner and watch sports frequently. She seemed to be making the adjustment well.
There wasn’t a time when we saw her at dinner or some other social occasion that she didn’t introduce us to a newly-minted friend.
I’d get to talking to them.
Wow! Some heavy financial hitters! Retired CEO here, doctors of everything from neuroscience to surgery there, professors and professionals everywhere.
That’s why I subtly prodded my mother to help set up a seminar for these well-heeled retired people…
