Every year on my birthday I think about the Volkswagon Beetle that made its debut here in the United States the year and day I was born. It was cute, little, and sporty. It became the car of my dreams and eventually, I owned a Kelly green hardtop and a yellow convertible. Luckily I have out-lasted the Beetle as they ceased production in 2019 and I keep chugging along.

I always knew someday I would become an old lady. But I never dreamed it would happen so fast. Yet here I am just weeks away from my 75th birthday, wondering “What’s it all about, Alfie?”

The title of that 1966 song, written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, is a thought-provoking song that raises questions about the meaning of life, pursuing happiness, and the nature of love.

I am trying to answer those questions.

What is the meaning of life?

For me, it’s all about connections. How I relate to other people has made my life meaningful. There are different types of connections, all of which are important. Some have been positive connections, some have been negative, but all the people that I have connected with throughout my life have been instrumental in making me the person I am today. The good, the bad, and the ugly.

Many of those relationships have made me feel strong, smart, confident, and secure. Yet, many of the people I’ve connected with along the way have made me feel weak, foolish, self-doubting, and insecure.

I think back to the friends who had supported me through thick and thin, adults who unintentionally became my mentors, and neighbors who had shown unbelievable kindness when I needed it the most. The connection with my husband of 52 years, my adult kids, and my grandkids has made me feel loved.

But I can’t discount the negative connections. They left an imprint on my heart.

The best friend who used me and taught me that there is no such thing as unconditional love. The teachers who told me I’d never amount to anything. The bully who belittled me for…
