WRITING PROMPT #70
The Little Things Matter
And best of all, we can do them
On a Sunday, at the end of a busy weekend, I was in the kitchen too much, but for good reason — my daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter were visiting. Talk about simple pleasures.
A small but joyous activity for my granddaughter is feeding our dog, Teddy, his morning food. Teddy is 62 pounds and tall but very gentle. I had measured out Teddy’s kibble and rice, and as I handed the bowl to my granddaughter to put down, my clumsy handoff resulted in a floor covered in dog food.
Truly, not what I needed!
I was tired and irritable, but my mood brightened when my granddaughter instantly said, “I’ll pick it up.”
I gave her a small dustpan and brush, and she “made all gone,” as we often tell toddlers to do when eating their food (though I think that is the “old school” in me, and it’s no longer said). In this case, my granddaughter did the cleanup, and Teddy “made all gone.”
This sounds like such a small moment, and it was. But at the time, it was early in the morning, I hadn’t gotten my bearings, and I had a “kitchen hangover” where I spent far too much time cooking and cleaning on previous days.
