Experience and clarity have me seeing things differently
As I blew out the candles on my 60th Birthday cake, I did what we all do when we hit a milestone year: I looked back at where I was, how far I’d come, and what I had to do to get there. It’s stunning how much our individual lives can change.
At 20, I was in college, learning to do the kind of work I would eventually drop out of college to do. I was also still dating my high school sweetheart. At 30, she and I were in the middle of a messy divorce, but I was finally doing my dream job of being on the radio in my hometown of Los Angeles. At 40, I was divorcing my second wife, who had become tired of moving from town to town every year or two. I had moved into morning radio, which required stepping back and working myself back up into the bigger cities. From a work perspective, I was having the time of my life.
At 50, I was single and had been for almost 10 years. By then, I had become a journalist and was working as an overnight news anchor. It would be another year before I met my current wife.
There were mistakes and regrets, but more importantly, there was clarity, the kind that only comes with experience. I was amazed at how much my sense of where I was, what I was doing, and how…
