Getting away for a day can be an enriching experience

My wife and I relocated a little over a year ago to northern California to be near our granddaughter, who will be two years old in January. We could not be happier with our decision because spending time interacting with her is very special. Still, we needed to carve out time for ourselves and have a life of our own in our new location.

As retirees, one thing we had always done where we previously lived was to take day trips. We were fortunate that we lived within an easy drive of many interesting places to visit.

While the new area in which we now live also has lots of places we could go in a day, we’re a little more intimidated about driving, especially on larger, crowded highways. We have made use of public transportation for some day trips, including the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) and the wonderful San Francisco Bay ferries. Still, that can take you only so far.

When we contacted the senior center in our local community, we were delighted to learn that the parks and recreation department offered numerous senior day trips. We have taken several and have found them to be enjoyable and enriching. We visited a lavender farm, a sustainable winery, and an olive mill where we enjoyed an olive oil tasting. We have seen…
