My mission: to recreate the best desserts of my childhood

I’ve been baking lately, after decades away from the craft. Maybe it was all those hours of The Great British Baking Show, or maybe writing my memoir jump-started my nostalgia. Whatever the reason, I’ve been making retro cakes and taking them to work to test on my coworkers.

With mixed reviews.

I started the baking project with cakes I used to bake in the 70s, because I remember how much I loved them. I want to see if they’re still tasty. I want to know if eating one is like stepping into a time machine. Will one bite transport me to a simpler, more innocent time?

Maybe they don’t live up to my fantasies. Maybe nostalgia isn’t so sweet after all.

When I was a little girl, my mother or Cousin Sophie did the family baking. Mom’s go-tos were traditional Eastern European fare: babka, with or without chocolate marbling; makownik (ma-KOV-nyeek), a poppy seed cake; apple kugel (baked fresh apples with egg noodles); or apple or plum cake.
