I’m 64 and at a stage in life where I think whatever I do to try to improve my physique, lose weight, or do anything to get fit is pretty much an uphill struggle.

My metabolism has come to a virtual standstill and all I need to do is have a glass of wine and I put on the three pounds I lost the week before. Nevertheless, I remain optimistic. I still go to the gym and drag my sorry ass around the 5k Parkrun once a week.

The problem is, physically, I’ve always been on the endomorphic side of things. I’ve never been slim or toned, even when I was in my teens. I remember at school, my friends all had the washboard abs and toned physiques that seemed to be natural. I, on the other hand, always seemed to carry a bit of extra fat and as I’ve gotten older it’s got worse.

I’m not quite at the stage where I need to be hoisted out of my bed by a crane or anything. It’s just that I’m not happy with the way I look in swimming shorts or when I go to the beach (which is hardly ever).

I’ve been going to the gym and exercising regularly for decades now. I trained in karate. I did HIIT classes for a while at a local gym and followed a diet plan.
