What’s That Man Doing on My Dream Board?
Confessions of a commitment-phobe at holiday time.
While looking at my dream board, an image caught my eye: A cut-out and pasted magazine photo of a man trudging through the snow carrying a Christmas wreath. The wreath is enormous, covering his face. No discerning details like age or race. While not obviously muscular, he’s plenty attractive in blue jeans and a wool sweater. From behind.
On my wall, he’s right next to another holiday image. One of a smiling woman in a circle of beaming angels. These angels sport tin foil halos and look to be Down syndrome kids who’ve just performed their Christmas pageant. All eyes sparkle.
I can picture me being with the kids much more easily than I see me with any man, or partner of any pronoun. And yet he is where my eyes landed. And no, it wasn’t about the wreath, which we have nowhere to hang. We’re still debating about putting up our fake tree, let alone dealing with wreaths.
So what’s this about a man?
I don’t feel lonely in the least. Not that I am aware of.
I don’t give a second glance to couples doing happy holiday things together like shopping for gifts or trees, playing with their kids, looking at lights, attending sing-a-longs, or any of the other…
