“Brian, you’ve got Afib,” my doctor said matter-of-factly breaking the news to me after interpreting the results of the tests his team administered over the past few weeks about a year ago.

Yikes, I’m doomed!

“Ahhh, it’s not so bad. You’ll take the blood thinner Eliquis and give up caffeine — no more coffee.” he told me authoritatively.

Yikes, I’m doomed!

“Oh Barrabee! Don’t be such a goddamned worry-wart, you’ll probably get unlucky and live to be 120,” my doctor said with a smile on his face.“Do yourself a favor: take your blood thinner, get a good sleep every night, eat healthy and stick to decaffeinated coffee,” he added as I left his office.

My new life

I relegated myself to a health conscious future. I sensed it wouldn’t be easy but thought once I got into the routine…

I cut down considerably on the coffee and what I did allow myself to drink was decaf. Actually I began to like my routine of sitting in one of the few tables in a nearby Dunkin's. I’d go there a few times a week and shoot the breeze with some of the folks who were of similar mind.

Not a bad life!
