This article was sparked by a question on Reddit. Retirees often discuss the question of “who you are after retirement. However, I think that the question is misunderstood.

During the working years, a common question at parties and other social gatherings is, “What do you do?” Everyone is curious about your choice of occupation. This is an easy question to answer. You may be a doctor, lawyer, or Indian chief. In this instance, both the question and the response are straightforward.

The individual posting on Reddit asks, “Who are you? Does your description hurt or help the transition to retirement?” This individual provides this response to the question.

I am a Husband, Father, cyclist, traveler, hiker/backpacker, and Software developer. That is how I have described myself for decades. The transition to retirement (three years ago) was easy for me.

Most of the 62 replies were similar. Here are a few of the other responses.

I am a husband, father, massage therapist, telemark skier, cyclist, hiker, naturalist and volunteer for National Park Service

I still identify as mother, wife, daughter and sister before anything else.

I’m a mom of 2 grownups, wife…
