My eyes don’t work as well as they used to, and my knees are a little creaky too, but my memories? They are very much intact.

If I close my eyes, I can still see him as if was just yesterday. That beautiful boy with the coal-black hair and the dazzling smile, and that summer we spent in Madrid all those years ago. All my senses tingle at those memories; the scent of the lemon groves, the sound of his voice reading to me in Spanish, and the taste of him. Oh God, the taste of him! He was sweeter than any food on God’s earth and I was addicted.

I learned a lot that summer. I learned how to love, and I learned how to let go, and even now my elderly body yearns for my beautiful boy. We will be together again soon. I just know it.
