“Where are you taking me? Are you going to hurt me?” Daniel asked, his voice quiet, full of pain and sadness. It took all of Lucas’s resolve to ignore him until they were out of sight of the hotel and near the woods.
“Are… are we going in there?” Daniel planted his feet firmly on the ground, forcing Lucas to stop. He was looking toward the woods with his eyes open wide, frightened.
“Yes, we are going into the woods. That’s where our home is.”
“No! No, no, no! I will not go live in the woods with you!” Daniel screamed at the top of his lungs. He started fighting against his father’s grasp on his hand. Lucas could hear the townspeople in their homes come outside and look toward them.
“Shit. Daniel, you need to be quiet now. I am your father, accept it. Your mother hid you from me, and now it’s time for me to get to know you. I won’t hurt you. Now let’s go.”
A gun went off in the distance, and the bullet whisked past Lucas’s body, missing him by inches. Hurrying now, he reached down and picked Daniel and his backpack up. Holding onto them tightly, he started running in an evasive pattern through the woods.
