We are pleased to announce that Crust Network and Functionland will collaborate to help bridge the gap between front-end developer toolset and decentralized storage solutions.

Functionland and Crust Network Collaborate to simplify user and developer experience of Web3

A century old business model has been challenged by the advent of Web3, “Advertising Revenue Generation”. Blockchain technologies enable creators from all walks of life to serve consumers without a need for mediators. This new generation of services have the potential to disrupt not only the foundations of our monetary systems, but also every means of societal interactions. Today we use crypto to send money to a friend, tomorrow we glance at our phones just to see if there is any app that’s still not powered by blockchain! We now live in a period of this S-Curve that adoption can go parabolic anytime.

In the partnership between Crust Network and Functionland, our mission is to help supercharge the adoption of Web3 by both end-users and the mainstream developer community. To remember how streamlined these aspects are in conventional centralized computing, let’s consider a typical “Gallery App” made by cloud vendors, the experience is seamless! In a matter of seconds, the user captures a moment on camera AND it’s saved on vendors’ servers. From the developer’s perspective, all needed backend functionalities were available in a few simple “serverless functions”.

Compare the UX with that of an imaginary dApp, the instructions would be:

“Pick up your phone and take the photo, now go to your desktop and open MetaMask in the browser to confirm you want to save it!”

And the DX:

“Setup an IPFS node on the device. Oh, is it iOS? Sorry, Apple won’t allow file system access :(”

Crust is sponsoring the work to address the gap illustrated in the above example. With the p2p server software that Functionland is creating, named “box”, developers will be able to interface with an on-premise device owned by the users via APIs that feel familiar in a client-server mindset. Crust Network will be used as a “Hot Storage” solution where users can backup their data over blockchain and access it instantly.

About Functionland

Founded in 2021, Functionland is the lead maintainer of the open-source “box” p2p server and “Photos’’ mobile app. Functionland is defining a new product category in the consumer space: “Personal Server”. We believe that a true decentralized Web only emerges when average end-users are also blockchain node operators.

The project welcomes contributors, we are still in the process of building the core protocols and plan to have an SDK ready in Q3 with a crowdfunding campaign for the hardware around the same time. You can read more about the design in the introduction blog.

About Crust

Crust implements the incentive layer protocol for decentralized storage, using storage layer protocols such as IPFS, and provides support for the application layer. Crust’s architecture also has the capability of supporting a decentralized computing layer and building a decentralized cloud ecosystem.

Currently, the Maxwell Preview network is live, and welcomes everyone to join for testing. Crust Network successfully joined the Substrate Builders Program and Web3.0 Bootcamp, and has also obtained a Web3 Foundation Grant.
