Announcement | Crust’s Alphanet Officially Launched— Exploring the New Solution to Storage
Crust AlphaNet, a decentralized storage & computing project based on the blockchain technology, has launched its testnet!
In the past year and a half, thanks to the joint efforts of the core development team of Crust and all contributors, Crust Alphanet is about to complete the final preparations for launch. Currently, the code library of Crust has been open-source and uploaded to Github: https://github.com/crustio
After the release of the Alphanet, it will be divided into multiple stages for improvement until the launch of the mainnet. The upcoming alphanet includes a GPoS (Guaranteed Proof of Stake) consensus protocol with storage resources as a guaranteed quota, storage volume certification realized based on TEE technology, and a corresponding blockchain browser and sample application chain disk. All miners and users interested in Crust are welcome to run and experience the node.
Before introducing Crust, let us explain decentralized storage.
Decentralized storage is a concept similar to cloud storage. The characteristics of the distributed data structure of the blockchain determine that network nodes and data are distributed around the world. It is a distributed, shared database jointly established by all nodes participating in this network all over the world and is not owned or controlled by a central institution. Compared to cloud storage, the advantages of decentralized storage are mainly reflected in 4 points:
1. Data privacy protection. Centralized servers have the right to manage user data, with no guarantee of data privacy and security. Data on the blockchain is divided into multiple pieces and stored on many nodes, and is encrypted to ensure the security and privacy of the data from the node.
2. Higher security. Stored data is distributed to storage nodes around the world. Compared with centralized storage networks, decentralized storage naturally has inbuilt security features such as data reliability, disaster tolerance, and DDoS resistance.
3. Higher availability. Bandwidth load is distributed to each node, which improves the overall network availability and efficiency.
4. Lower cost. Blockchain’s encryption algorithm has a great ability to solve the problem of data deduplication, and can also reduce the data redundancy rate. Also, the edge node architecture of the blockchain has lower requirements for hardware and no requirements for professional cooling systems. This can reduce the cost of the entire system and the cost to end users.
Crust, starting from the decentralized storage scenario, uses the most advanced blockchain technology and combines the Trusted Execution Environment technology in an innovative way to achieve a trustworthy, reliable, efficient, and ubiquitous decentralized cloud service ecosystem.
Crust implements a decentralized storage protocol of the incentive layer with adapting to multiple storage protocols including IPFS and provides support for the application layer. At the same time, Crust’s architecture is also capable of supporting the decentralized computing layer to build a distributed cloud ecosystem.
Decentralized storage allows files to be stored on different hosts by distributing the files across the entire network without being restricted by any centralized entity. Users can flexibly manage their data, and effectively enhance data security and reliability through data encryption, secure backup, authorized access and other means. At the same time, the storage space sharing model can also effectively reduce storage costs to end-users.
In 2019, Gartner, the world’s leading research and advisory company, announced the Top 10 strategic technology trends for 2020, which shows that distributed cloud service and practical blockchain technology are among the top ten technology development directions in 2020. Crust is exactly the overlap and extension of these two areas.
The MPoW framework and GPoS consensus first proposed by the project have received active attention from all parties in the ecosystem, including the Web3 Foundation and Huawei Edge Computing Industry Alliance. Crust recently joined the Substrate Builder’s Program sponsored by Parity. On the road to promoting the development of the underlying technology of blockchain and the Web3 ecosystem, Crust will spare no effort to cooperate with various ecological partners.
