How Cryptic Conjure uses the Ethereum Blockchain

Cryptic Conjure is powered by the Ethereum blockchain. Since many players have had specific questions regarding our technology, we thought we’d lay out a little more detail about how we’re taking advantage of the technology.

First, some technical details: we’re using the ERC-20 standard for fungible tokens, and the ERC-721 standard for non-fungible tokens. Our game’s primary currency will be simple ETH, and we are not in any capacity issuing an initial coin offering. Our smart contract has been written specifically to reduce gas costs as much as possible, to ensure players can move items as cheaply and efficiently as they can.

All that said, it’s important to note that in an RPG, there are constant transactions in which players are receiving and transferring items. Loot can drop from literally any kill, which can happen dozens of times even within several minutes. You might sell off a large variety of lesser items to a vendor, or trade them in for a quest.

For this reason, at this time, it simply isn’t practical to put every single item, ingredient, material, and piece of equipment on the blockchain. With the exception of Essence (tokens created by crafting a new spell), which are always on-chain, most items will initially be held as a normal online game would hold them: on a standard, secure database.

However, players will be able to take anything in the game…crysta, spell ingredients, powerful weapons…and simply pay the gas cost, minting a new token onto the Ethereum blockchain. The player can, of course, now do anything they wish with it, up to and including even writing their own smart contracts, but it’s also important to note that we’ll be providing a fully-featured marketplace, both on our website and in-game, to facilitate minting tokens, selling, buying, trading, and even an auction house. The crypto-elements of the game can be nearly transparent to more casual players, and more experienced players can really fine-tune how they want to manage their on-chain assets.

We think this sort of hybrid approach offers the most flexibility: cheap costs for players looking to really engage in trading, while still maintaining the endless possibility of a true digital economy.
