How a small team from Belgrade, Serbia managed to create a unique æternity based game
There is an old saying that goes like this “If it looks like a legend, fights like a legend, and wins like a legend, then it probably is a legend.” We may have made that up, but you get the picture. Cryptic Legends feels and looks like it brings to life stories beyond this time and age — while being an addictive card collecting game that mashes together hero management, tactical auto-combat, rich lore based on real-world mythology, and æternity!
What is Cryptic Legends?
Cryptic Legends is a blockchain-based tactical hero management game inspired by real-world legends. As a player, you can assemble and manage a team of heroes, sending them into automated tactical battles against other players, while uncovering the rich history and mythology inspired by real-world cultures.
Players have the option to collect millions of heroes with different power and talents — and consequently, rarity — to upgrade and customize their skills as often as they like, creating the best team in order to dominate the battlegrounds.
All heroes in Cryptic Legends are stored on the æternity blockchain, which means that they are owned by players: you can keep them, sell them, or trade them!
By collecting different heroes with various attributes and talents, you obtain cryptics — excerpt of lore and stories of the Cryptic Legends universe. By piecing them together you get to understand what happened to the world, how the Gods are related to one another, and how the tribes (and you) fit into the big picture.
The game is currently built for Android and iOS, with other platforms planned in the future.
Why should you join the game?
First, there are literally millions of heroes to collect in Cryptic Legends — each has a unique combination of attributes and talents, in addition to class and tribe affiliation. All these factors influence how you use your hero — small changes can make a big difference when your party consists of four characters.
Secondly, even though the game features auto-combat, you have many ways to influence the battle — the setup of your heroes is important. Players can change hero builds and setups before battles to create dynamic, powerful combinations. The skills and equipment of your heroes may be customized as often as you like between battles, which can make a significant impact on the outcome.
And of course, there is æternity and the way in which your heroes are stored on it.

Our driving idea was to merge blockchain technology to have players really own the game assets they obtain. We wanted to base our game economy on the blockchain and we found that æternity had a much better transaction throughput with a lower cost per transaction than other blockchains we’ve tested, making it beneficial to our game economy.
By storing Heroes on the æternity blockchain, Cryptic Legends makes it possible for players to truly own their own strategy, hero setups and builds. Each Cryptic Legends Hero is a unique blockchain asset that can be traded, stored, or even sold for other cryptocurrencies, such as æternity’s AE Token.
Cryptic Legends is a collectible card game with league seasons and planned events, so the built-in oracles available with æternity open-up new avenues of possibility for use in-game event design.
