What is Dencun effect ?

The Ethereum Dencun effect stems from the Dencun upgrade, a significant enhancement aimed at increasing the Ethereum blockchain’s scalability and efficiency. This upgrade is an amalgamation of two crucial updates — Cancun and Deneb — focusing on the execution and consensus layers, respectively. The core of this upgrade involves the implementation of proto-danksharding (EIP-4844), which introduces blob-carrying transactions for handling large data packets more efficiently than the traditional CALLDATA. This is a strategic move to scale Ethereum’s data availability, promising lower transaction costs and higher speeds​​​​​​.

Implementation Timeline

The Dencun upgrade is scheduled for the first quarter of 2024. It has undergone testing on various testnets, starting from January 17, 2024, through to February 2024. This phased testing approach ensures the upgrade’s readiness for a seamless integration into the Ethereum mainnet​​.

Changes in Transactions

Post-Dencun, Ethereum transactions will experience a significant reduction in fees, particularly for layer 2 rollups, due to the more cost-effective handling of large data packets (blobs). The upgrade will increase the network’s throughput, allowing for more data to be included in each block without overwhelming the network. This not only reduces operational costs for rollups but also improves scalability for the entire network​​.

Changes in Smart Contract Implementation

With the Dencun upgrade, smart contract implementation on Ethereum will see several new developments:

  • Introduction of New Opcodes: The upgrade includes new EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) opcodes such as BLOBSTORE and BLOBLOAD for handling blob data, and additional opcodes like TLOAD and TSTORE for transient storage, MCOPY for efficient memory copying, and modifications to the SELFDESTRUCT function. These changes will offer developers new tools and methods for designing and optimizing smart contracts​​.
  • Optimization and Security Enhancements: The upgrade introduces several EIPs aimed at optimizing smart contract execution and enhancing security. For example, EIP-4788 integrates the Beacon chain data into the execution layer, EIP-5656 adds a new memory copying instruction, and EIP-6780 modifies the use of SELFDESTRUCT. These improvements are designed to make smart contracts more efficient, secure, and versatile​​.
  • Impact on Staking and Validator Operations: EIPs like EIP-7044 and EIP-7045 are introduced to provide more flexibility and control to stakers and validators, improving the overall robustness of Ethereum’s PoS consensus mechanism. These changes will indirectly affect how certain types of smart contracts, particularly those involved in staking and consensus mechanisms, are implemented and interacted with​​.
  • Price Impact : Market Dynamics and Cryptocurrency Prices: Market-related factors such as beta, trading volume, and volatility are significant determinants of cryptocurrency prices, including Ethereum, in both the short and long run. The attractiveness of cryptocurrencies also plays a role in their price determination, but primarily in the long run
