Werewolf or Lycanthropy is a fiction character, but why it exists at the beginning?

Perhaps there is some scientific evidence that shows some kind of illness from the human gene?

Or just some imagination from earlier pre-science days?

Or just a movie presentation…

Or just an excuse for a serial killer…
